How To Style A Winter Outfit Without Looking Like A Marshmallow

WINTER… THE SEASON WHERE COOLER TEMPERATURES SEE US LEANING TOWARDS OUR INNATE NEED TO PILE ON THE LAYERS.

However this season is also commonly known to most stylists as the time when the marshmallow era comes into full effect. Always seemingly setting itself aside as the quarter when most really struggle with creating layers that work to their proportions.

Have you ever felt caught in this cycle? Desperate to keep warm as you make your morning work commute through the city or head out for a frosty date night, but stuck on how to create a sleek and neat look, minus the marshmallow effect?

Although most prefer winter styling as the ease of being able to add layers to regulate temperature is often a tad more convenient than deciding on what to wear through the heat. Believe it or not, there is in fact such a thing as too many layers. The effort to combine multiple textures and blankets of clothing without consideration of composition will more often than not result in adding too much bulk. Many therefore find themselves trading in comfort to move freely, with a need for warmth.

Looking to find ease in your winter styling this season? I’ve got just the tips to help!

01. CONSIDER UNDER LAYERS AND TEMPERATURE LOCKING FABRICS

When looking at items that you are adding to your winter wardrobe, it’s firstly about considering your lifestyle and the level of warmth that is needed for practicality.

Puffer or quilted jackets are perfect for the elements and keep you warm whether you’re doing a school drop off or heading out for a weekend sport. As for a warm overcoat, this is a wardrobe staple for everyday through to weekend wear to add extra warmth though also giving you a stylist and timeless outerwear piece.

One of the most effective ways to layer and stylishly maintain warmth without the bulk, is to look at adding underlayers. I love both merino wool and heat tech technology underlays that provide warmth and streamlined layers under both knits and coats.

02. SELECTING THE PERFECT WINTER COAT

It’s all about the fabric, fit and also the longevity of the piece in your wardrobe.

Firstly, look at the composition of the fabric of the coat. Wool and wool blends will give you that extra warmth as it is a natural fibre and will be a piece that will last the long term in your wardrobe, although it may be a higher investment. It’s all about longevity and quality ensures that these staple items will be something you pull from your wardrobe for seasons to come. In contrast, a polyester blend fabric can prove to be just as warm, however you’ll need to be mindful of the lining and thickness of the fabric.

When picking a winter coat, also keep in mind that you may need to layer underneath. So, ensuring when you are trying the garment, check to see that it allows enough room in the shoulder, arm and waist areas.

03. 2023 WINTER TRENDS

Bold, coloured and textured coats are making a stance this season. We have seen a rise in beautifully tailored pieces with a fresh spin on the traditional winter neturals of black, caramel and tans.
